Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. Since her father's departure the family of Ford, they were looked after by her mother, grandmother and godparents. In her childhood, Ford suffered anxiety due to an obsessional-compulsive condition. Ford began acting during her teen years and joined part of the National Youth Theatre. The school she was accepted to was Sylvia Young Theatre School. But after just a few weeks, she realized this school wasn't for her. Ford rather applied to the Central School of Speech and Drama, finally winning an acceptance on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's classmates. The actor went on to get regular roles in the shows Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993. She already had her TV debut in the 1992 episode Surgical Spirit. She adopted the title Catherine Tate. Through the Nineties, Tate could be seen on television in programmes including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. Her regular work in theatre brought her into The Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 Season. Tate gained not long after her recognition for her stand-up comedies, which were added to Tate's repertoire in 1996.
